Fashion Alumna Wendy Manasse Returns to Inspire the Next Generation of Designers

When Wendy Manasse 鈥81 walked back onto the 糖心原创 campus this fall, it was a full-circle moment 鈥 a return to the community that launched her career in fashion design.

Though she has visited many times before as a critic and juror, this was her first trip (in nearly a decade) as a mentor, eager to help students dream boldly and prepare thoughtfully for their futures.

鈥淚 came back to reengage with the students,鈥 Manasse said. 鈥淚 wanted to see what opportunities I can provide to them and to the faculty 鈥 to help make their dreams come true when they graduate.鈥

Empowering Roots

Manasse鈥檚 Stephens story began in the late 1970s, an era she remembers as vibrant with women鈥檚 empowerment.

鈥淚t was the late 鈥70s, early 鈥80s 鈥 there was a lot of energy around women finding their voices,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd going to a women鈥檚 college amplified that.鈥

She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design, building the creative and technical skills that fueled her career. Stephens, she said, gave her the tools, the courage to take risks and the exposure to different perspectives that shaped her path as an artist, entrepreneur, and ultimately a mentor.

鈥淪tephens exposed me to so many different lifestyles and perspectives,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat combination of skills, exposure, and opportunity really shaped me.鈥

Over the next three decades, Manasse built an impressive career in the fashion industry. She began at Sansappelle in Chicago as an assistant designer. Next was designing for Jantzen Swimwear in Portland, Oregon, where she discovered her passion for swimwear. She then made a move to Catalina Swimwear in Los Angeles, which then became Authentic Fitness Corporation, where she rose from Merchandiser to President of Design and Development.

In 2007, she launched her own line, Quenchwear, a swim and activewear brand she operated in Long Beach, California until 2015. Since then, she has focused on mentoring students, offering career coaching and guidance through workshops and one-on-one support.

Returning to Give Back

鈥淪tudents are my real passion,鈥 Manasse said. 鈥淔ashion is so different today than when I started, and everyone deserves a chance to go after what they want.鈥

At Stephens, she led a workshop focused on what she calls 鈥渓ife pointers鈥濃攑ractical, real-world lessons designed to build confidence and help students navigate their early careers.

鈥淏efore I offer anything, I want to understand who the students are,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a whole different world than when I was here, so I designed a session about practical, real-world lessons.鈥

She was especially glad that freshmen were included. 鈥淚t鈥檚 never too early to start thinking about your career,鈥 she said.

Beyond the workshop, Manasse met individually with every fashion student 鈥 a highlight of her visit. 鈥淲orkshops are great, but one-on-one time is where real growth happens,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hose personal conversations are where real connections form.鈥

Finding Confidence Through Connection

For Arin-Christina Hawk, a senior fashion design major, Manasse鈥檚 visit came at the perfect time.

鈥淎s a fine arts major, it鈥檚 scary your senior year, wondering if you鈥檒l find a job,鈥 Hawk said. 鈥淜nowing she went to Stephens and built such a successful career 鈥 it鈥檚 comforting and inspiring.鈥

The workshop, Hawk said, gave her a clearer view of what鈥檚 possible after graduation. 鈥淚t鈥檚 nice to know success is possible 鈥 and that she started right where we are.鈥

A Stephens Signature: Mentorship and Access

Hawk credits experiences like this with setting Stephens apart.

鈥淲e have quite a few speakers here,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t feels unique to Stephens 鈥 hearing directly from alumni who鈥檝e been in the industry is so beneficial.鈥

She also praised her professors for connecting classroom learning with real-world readiness. 鈥淭hey give incredible insight into their careers,鈥 Hawk said. 鈥淚t helps us focus on what really matters 鈥 networking, building a strong portfolio, and being prepared to step into the industry.鈥

A Legacy of Empowerment

For both Manasse and Hawk, the Stephens experience is about more than fashion 鈥 it鈥檚 about confidence, creativity, and connection.

鈥淪tephens has given me experiences I don鈥檛 think I could鈥檝e had anywhere else,鈥 Hawk said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 set me up to succeed 鈥 not just as a designer, but as a person.鈥

Manasse agreed. 鈥淪tephens gave me so much,鈥 she said. 鈥淏eing able to give back now feels like coming full circle.鈥
